I see alot of the gurus on Youtube swear by the sony a5100 for selfies and makeup pics. Probably gonna look into getting that one myself. Still researching though.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend.
I'm looking to get a Canon 600D but only because I wish to film as well so it's a good investment for the long term

I have a canon 550d and it's lovely for photos and filming
It's a slightly older dslr model now but still works perfectly! Highly recommended.
If you are looking at cameras make sure you get to know your settings no matter which one you get, that's how you get good quality images. So many people stick it on auto and use it as a point and shoot (which is still fine!) but cameras are capable of so much more nowadays. For dslr cameras the lens is what really makes a difference to photo standards though, they're pricey up front so definitely check out ebay/amazon for lens.
