heavy ear mats/hematomas

I have a neighbor with an Australian-doodle who has heavy ear mats - the ears are completely matted - no visible skin. I know the ears will need to be shaved down but am not at the point in my studies where I feel comfortable doing so. I am concerned that when the ears are shaved, hematomas will develop. Does anyone know how quickly that could happen? I'm thinking I should tell her to take the dog to a vet to have the ears shaved. Thoughts?
thank you

We were taught to not diagnose. This is definitely a situation the vet needs to handle. Im sure you want to help the dog, but this could have a horrible outcome. This dog could bleed to death before you get him to the vet. I wish the best to you and the dog but this is out of your training and the dog needs a vet ASAP. He is probably in a great deal of pain from infection if nothing else.

I definitely wouldn't try to shave them myself. I'll recommend she take the dog to her veterinarian. Thank you.
